               FLOOD IN ASSAM

INTRODUCTION:- Flood is one of the recurring natural disaster which is an outcome of heavy rainfall and the accumulation of excessive water in every living area. Assam is the worst victim of repeated floods every year.

CAUSE OF FLOOD:- Several factors including natural and artificial are responsible for the occurrence of floods in Assam. First and foremost, with the advent of the monsoon, it starts raining cats and dogs. Heavy shower cause floods. The Brahmaputra and its tributaries cause floods in the rainy season.

Secondly, there are also human induce factors like destruction of wetlands, deforestation and encouragement on river banks. Drainage congestion due to man-made embankment is one of the crucial factors responsible for urban floods that can be visible every year in cities like Gauhati, Silchar etc.

DAMAGES CAUSED BY FLOOD:- The damages caused by floods beggar description. The destruction of properties and loss of life is visible every passing year. Lacs are rendered homeless, standing cops are damaged and railway lines, bridges etc get damaged badly hence affecting the economic state.

RELIEF MEASURE:- The state Govt, Central Govt and some organizations offer relief materials including free distribution of food, clothes, medicine etc to the flood affected people in relief camps.

HOW TO CONTROL FLOODS:- Perhaps best solution lies in the recently proposed plan of interlinking the rivers of India whereby extra water of Brahmaputra and its tributaries can be diverted to dry land areas of western and southern India at the minimum cost of marine environment and ecological degradation.

CONCLUSION:- It's evident that floods are destructive. The adverse effect of floods affect normal livelihood and the environment. The central Govt should declare the flood of Assam a national problem. The state Govt should construct more and more embankment on both side of the river.
